Flight safety in 2001

An essential goal in the Flight Safety Authority’s work is to maintain the flight safety in Finland at a high international level, as defined by the Ministry of Transport and Communications. For flight safety in Finland year 2001 was rather good, in line with the previous years.

In airline operations there were no accidents. One foreign airliner was damaged in a heavy hail shower within Helsinki-Vantaa control zone. Three serious incidents occurred.

General aviation accounted for four accidents, three of which occurred to helicopters and one to an aeroplane. The aeroplane accident caused one fatality. General aviation also had nine incidents of aircraft damage and three other serious incidents.

In sport aviation occurred three accidents, of which one to a glider, one to a powered glider and one in parachuting. One person was killed in the parachuting accident. There were also 12 incidents of aircraft damage, which involved six gliders and six ultralight aeroplanes.

The Flight Safety Authority monitors and investigates incidents and occurrences based on reports submitted to it. Last year, the FSA received 509 occurrence reports, while the figure for the previous year was 438.
